WANSTEAD: English Heritage has earmarked Wanstead Builders' Merchants in Woodbine Place as an historic building for listed status.
Three other buildings, The George pub, the former Kinema, and Wisteria Cottage have also been selected.
The national conservation agency provided advice on how buildings in Wanstead could be more effectively protected after the unlawful demolition of the 19th Century Truffles Cottage earlier this year.
Andrew Wernick at the Wanstead Society said statutory listing would provide far more protection for the buildings than they currently have.
Mr Wernick said: "These buildings are really important to the history of the area and deserve to be looked after. Hopefully English Heritage will now give them statutory listing. That would really change things."
But any plans by the property owners to develop these sites could be seriously limited if granted listed status.
