MANCHESTER: The UK's four million small business owners must ensure their salary systems are fair, following of a glut of equal pay claims in the public sector.
Martin Edwards, head of employment law at law firm Mace & Jones, said high profile equal pay disputes in councils and hospitals could trigger similar equal pay claims against small companies.
"Equal pay claims against owner managers could have devastating consequences and are the last thing a small company needs in the recession," he said.
Mr Edwards also urged business owners to undertake an equal pay audit to root out potential problems. "Prevention of a problem is much cheaper than a cure so far as employers are concerned," he commented.
