ST NEOTS: An energy efficient self-build home is being constructed to show off the potential of its green properties.
The 258sq metre barn-style property is being put together over eight months at Kingspan Potton's Self-Build Show Centre in St Neots. Progress on the house can be followed online at www.buildapottonbarn.co.uk.
The self-build home would usually take 12-weeks to construct, and it is hoped the project will show first-hand how it is possible to build a good looking, sustainable home.
Tina Nash, at Kingspan Potton, said: "You never normally see the process behind building a show home, you just see the finished property. For would be self-builders, seeing the build is just as important as the finished result."
She added: "Last year, building to Code Level 4 became a requirement of planning in some areas. There are a myriad of ways to meet the Code but getting the fabric of the building as energy efficient as possible provides a cost efficient and maintenance free way of achieving Code Level 4."
The home will be 25% more energy efficient than a normal house due to the level of insulation used, conforming to Level 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes.
People will also be able to visit the St Neots site during a series of open days planned for later this year.
