LONDON: As panic grips retailers the New Year sales are staring early. B&Q started its January sale last week which will run until March – the firm's longest-ever sale.

Retail sales volumes for November fell 0.4% from the previous month, according to the Office for National Statistics. Stripping out fuel, the figures were even worse, down 0.7% as discounts and promotions failed to entice shoppers, casting more doubt over high street prospects this Christmas.

B&Q is to make £60m worth of price cuts to support a £5.5m marketing campaign including B&Q's biggest ever digital spend.
