BAKEWELL: A resourceful store manager has been rewarded for his initiative after fire damage left him without premises.

Tom Clayton, who manages Plumb Center in Bakewell, was on the brink of watching his sales targets go down the drain after fire ravaged his store.

Undeterred, the 29-year-old set up base from the Chesterfield branch and used his car as an office and delivery vehicle to meet Bakewell's plumbing needs.

To mark the fact that Tom achieved every sales target in spite of the circumstances, he scooped a silver award at Wolseley's UK annual customer service competition.

Mr Clayton, who was awarded a cash prize and trophy, said: "I think it is testimony to the quality of the team and the strength of our customer relationships that we've been able to cope with such a big setback."
