High oil prices will combine with this to hike the cost of a litre of petrol up by 5p. This will add around £120 a year on fuel costs for the average two-car family.
Prices at the pumps were around 85p/litre at the start of 2009. They have now climbed to around 105p and, it is feared, could hit 11p in a matter of weeks.
The rise in petrol duty will be the third in nine months.
