Its survey shows that consumers spent an average of £6362 on their homes in the past year.
Although giving the house a new look with paint and wallpaper remains the most popular option, with 65% carrying out this form of alteration, bigger changes like a new bathroom were carried out by 19% of consumers.
Installing a new kitchen was revealed to be the most costly change, with the average total coming in at £6609, while new windows and doors was also found to be a costly renovation, with the average price totalling £3646.
First-time buyers are also spending a considerable sum on fitting out their new homes, with Santander Mortgages finding that the average property belonging to a new owner has £5495 worth of belongings.
