OLDHAM: Former builders merchant, Mick Harwood has launched an on-line business selling accessories for scooter enthusiasts.
Mr Harwood, himself a scooter fan, previously ran Oldham-based builders' merchants, Harwood Jackson, which he launched in 1990 with Lee Jackson and David Barge and a £15,000 loan.
Mr Harwood said: "I launched the builders' merchants in 1990 with two colleagues and then built it up from being a start-up and I'm hoping to do exactly the same with this."
"I'd started working in builders' merchants as soon as I left school and it was the natural progression for me to establish Harwood Jackson," he said.
"But one of the things I realised was that it was the business side of things that I liked the most. The Internet has revolutionised the way people can launch businesses with comparatively low start-up costs," he said.
The on-line business, Scoots, Suits and Boots supplies scooters, riding wear and fashion accessories to like-minded enthusiasts.
Mr Harwood said: "Many people have asked me about the wisdom of launching any business venture in a recession. From my perspective, the economic climate has meant that while many of the major suppliers might not have done business with a start-up company before, they are now prepared to help us."
