LEIGH: Travis Perkins is donating a beach to Leigh as part of the town's annual festival to promote itself as a rival to Lancashire's traditional seaside resorts.

Gary Turner, manager Travis Perkins, Leigh, said: "Although neighbouring Wigan boasts a pier, there aren't too many sand dunes in Leigh town centre. It will take a couple of hours to build the beach but seeing the delight on people's faces makes the effort worthwhile."

Travis is sponsoring the event, for the second year running, with a three-tonne donation of sand. The town centre seaside features a funfair, carousels, and inflatable slide with free rides on donkeys brought from Blackpool for the week.
