SOUTHAMPTON: Hosepipe bans in southern and South East England have triggered a run on sales of water butts.

B&Q said its sales of these products are 196% up on this time last year following the announcement that seven water companies will be implementing bans next month.

B&Q is also to follow its success with topical gnomes. In 2012, it sold an England football figurine to commemorate the World Cup and had royal wedding-themed figurines last year to celebrate the Duke of Cambridge's marriage.

This year, a pair of gnomes will represent the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh to mark her Majesty's  Jubilee Year.

The gnomes go on sale in May at £20 a pair as a limited edition. Gurinder Jellehwallia, of B&Q, said: "If ever there was a time to celebrate Britishness and our sense of humour, 2012 is that year. By popular demand, our limited edition gnomes will be hitting shelves in May. We've already had requests for them – a right royal waiting list."
