YORKSHIRE: Cementing the future of the industry, heavyside manufacturer Cemex has opened a £1.3m ready-mixed concrete plant, on land at Hazel Court, York, near the city's household waste recycling centre.

The batch plant replaces Cemex's old unit, surrounded by homes in Leeman Road, which was built 39 years ago.

A spokeswoman for Cemex said the company is planning to sel the old site for residential development.  The new highly automated plant will be operated by John Kirraine, who has been with the company for 13 years.

The investment, Cemex said, gives the company more space and will allow for the company to be more sustainable by, for example, recycling water.  It would also be more productive, producing computerised mixes of 60 metres of ready-mixed concrete each hour.
